A Must-Know for Multipitch & Trad
The Munter Hitch is technically not a knot, but it’s one of the most important knots for outside. Should you drop your belay device, you can always belay off a munter. It works for both the leader and follower and catches in every direction.
That makes it perfect for emergencies AND for belay stations where the direction of fall won’t work with the belay device. For example, on Blockgrat at Battert, the anchor of the first pitch is on the top of a free standing tower. Pitch two involves moving onto the rock face and a fall would drop you immediately below the belayer. Munter is the only option here.
